Frequently Asked Questions
What is the goal of this project?
The City of Pomona, in collaboration with the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG), aims to enhance safety, accessibility, and mobility at the Union Pacific Railroad at-grade crossings on Hamilton Boulevard and Park Avenue. The project focuses on improving pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure to create a more walkable and connected community.
What improvements are planned?
Key enhancements include:
Installation of Class 2 buffered bike lanes to close critical gaps in the bicycle network along Hamilton Boulevard (from Orange Grove to Mission) and Park Avenue (from W. Commercial to 3rd Street).
Construction of ADA-compliant curb ramps and widened sidewalks.
Addition of pedestrian refuge islands and crosswalks to improve safety and accessibility.
Installation of pedestrian swing gates, alert systems, right-of-way fencing, and railroad crossing signage to enhance safety for both pedestrians and cyclists.
How is community feedback being incorporated?
Community input is vital to the project's success. Residents were encouraged to participate in surveys and public meetings to share their insights and concerns. Feedback will directly influence design decisions, ensuring the project aligns with the community's needs and priorities.
What are residents saying about the project?
Residents have expressed, through a survey, a strong desire for improved infrastructure and safety measures:
"We should be aiming to make Pomona a 'walkable' city. Walkable cities are attractive, better for business, cheaper to maintain, and inviting to new people."
"Pomona needs a fully mapped out bike lane network. Separated multi-use paths are best for biking and should be pursued to maximize pedestrian and biking."
These comments highlight the community's support for the project's objectives and the importance of creating a safer, more accessible environment for all.
How will the project address safety concerns?
The project includes several safety enhancements:
Installation of pedestrian swing gates and alert systems at railroad crossings.
Implementation of right-of-way fencing to prevent unauthorized access.
Improved signage and road markings to guide pedestrians and cyclists safely.
Upgraded lighting to increase visibility during evening hours.
These measures aim to reduce accidents and create a safer environment for all users.
When will construction begin?
As of now, the project is in the design phase, with design completion anticipated in Spring 2025. Construction timelines will be determined following the completion of the design phase and securing necessary funding.
